My second example of maximizing space utilization is one of the projects featured in my portfolio. This room originally had a small wardrobe on the left that didn’t provide enough storage for my client’s clothing. He had added a clothing rack and some baskets on the floor to store socks and underwear. However, the baskets were neither sufficient nor practical as a storage solution.

Behind the wall where the clothing rack stood was an unfinished, condemned closet space. My client could access this area from inside his small closet, but it was dark, cramped, and impractical.

We decided to open up the wall and turn that unused area into an extension of the existing closet. We reused the extendable rod that connects both closet sections and brought in an IKEA Malm dresser for storing socks, underwear, and knit sweaters. We also installed a second rod at the bottom left to create additional hanging space for pants. There’s still space at the bottom right for a large foldable laundry basket.

To finish the look, we added curtains, closet lighting, and a mirror on the left wall. These simple additions not only add functionalities but also elevated the style and made the wardrobe look custom-designed without spending much money.

Originally, the bed was pushed up against the wall, leaving only about 10 inches of space at the foot—too narrow for circulation or functional use. There was no headboard's storage.

We moved the bed’s headboard back and placed the end of the bed closer to the wall. We repurposed two IKEA LACK shelves that the client already owned but no longer used, transforming them into a custom storage headboard. This provided a spot for books, a clock, and other bedside essentials, while also creating additional storage space underneath.

Key takeaways from this example:

  • Look for hidden or underused spaces in your home—sometimes even behind walls—and make use of them.

  • Repurpose items you already have, like turning wall shelves into a headboard.

  • Rethink your furniture layout for better flow and space efficiency—for example, repositioning the bed to make room for built-in storage.

I hope these tips inspire you to create a practical, cost-effective, and stylish space.
